Biography Garner Clancey

In the past 20 years, I have been fortunate to have enjoyed diverse work and educational experiences. Having worked for the (then) NSW Department of Juvenile Justice and NSW Police Force for a decade, I moved into consultancy work. As a consultant, I have worked on diverse crime prevention projects, which have included:

• Preparation of reports for the NSW Juvenile Justice Advisory Council, the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Children, Young People and the Built Environment, the NSW Police Force, the NSW Crime Prevention Division, the Sydney Institute of Criminology, the Australian Institute of Criminology, the Ted Noffs Foundation, Midnight Basketball Australia, NSW Police and Community Youth Clubs, shopping centre companies, numerous councils, and various other organisations
• Development and delivery of training to shopping centre security guards across various Australian jurisdictions
• Compilation of comprehensive crime profiles for local councils
• Coordination of the development of local government crime prevention plans
• Coordination of community safety audits and preparation of associated reports
• Training of local government staff, police, university students, community groups and security personnel in approaches to crime prevention
• Development of the Considerations for Establishing a Public Space CCTV System resource manual for the Australian Institute of Criminology
• Preparation of training materials (including distance and self-paced packages) for numerous bodies, including the South Australian Youth Affairs Council, the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre and the Youth Action and Policy Association

I have studied psychology (BA psychology major), criminology (Masters of Criminology) and I completed doctoral research focusing on local crime trends and prevention techniques (PhD, Sydney). I have developed and delivered crime prevention, policing and security tertiary courses across six universities (University of Sydney, University of NSW, University of Western Australia, University of Western Sydney, University of New England and Charles Sturt University). I am currently a Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Sydney Institute of Criminology (University of Sydney), an Executive Committee member of the Australian Crime Prevention Council and an Associate Member of the Applied Criminology Centre, University of Huddersfield. I have served on various boards and committees; published a small number of academic articles on juvenile crime, crime prevention and alcohol and other drugs issues; and have had the opportunity to make presentations to conferences in various countries.

All of these experiences have informed the development of my crime prevention teaching and training resources.
